Deeper and Darker Mod: How to Open the Otherside Portal

The reinforced deepslate gateway, the Heart of the Deep, and what to check when it will not ignite.

Where the portal is

Deeper and Darker uses the large reinforced deepslate frame associated with Ancient Cities as the gateway to its Otherside dimension. Start by locating an Ancient City in the Deep Dark and identify the portal-shaped reinforced deepslate structure rather than trying to build a normal Nether portal.

Get the Heart of the Deep

The mod’s gameplay documentation ties portal activation to the Heart of the Deep, an item obtained from the Warden. That makes portal access a progression step rather than a free travel mechanic. Prepare for the Warden encounter carefully and avoid carrying gear you cannot afford to lose.

Clear the inside of the frame

Before activation, inspect the inside opening of the reinforced deepslate frame. Sculk veins or other blocks occupying the portal opening can prevent the gateway from lighting. Clear the obstruction and leave the interior space open.

Activate the frame

With the correct mod version loaded and the Heart of the Deep in hand, use the heart on the reinforced deepslate portal frame. When the conditions are met, the gateway should activate and provide access to the Otherside. This is not a flint-and-steel portal.

If the portal still does not light

First verify that Deeper and Darker is actually loaded in the current world. Then confirm that you are interacting with the Ancient City portal frame, the opening is clear and the item is the Heart of the Deep. If you are using a large modpack, reproduce the problem in a test world with a minimal mod list to separate a mod conflict from a progression mistake.

Before stepping through

Write down the portal coordinates, carry food and healing supplies, and bring enough durable gear for a hostile dimension. If you are exploring an important survival world, make a backup before major mod changes or version upgrades.
